A soft hand holds an ace counted as 11 without busting. Soft 17 = ace + 6, or ace + cards totaling 6. If the dealer draws a bust card with ace at 11, the ace becomes 1: the hand turns hard.

For the player, soft 17 is often a hand where hitting or doubling can be correct per basic strategy. For the dealer, the rule is fixed: they follow the table script.

Understanding soft vs hard 17 avoids beginner mistakes online and live.

Dealer stands on soft 17 (S17): dealer stops on any 17, soft or hard. Dealer hits on soft 17 (H17): dealer draws on soft 17, slightly raising house edge.

The gap looks small but adds up over thousands of hands. Prefer S17 tables when you can, especially with 3:2 blackjack payout.

The rules panel on live or RNG screens states H17 or S17. Read it before your first bet.

Your soft 17 is not the dealer's hand: you may double, hit, or stand per basic strategy charts. Do not treat soft 17 like automatic hard 17.

Against dealer 3–6, doubling soft 17 is often recommended. Against 10 or ace, charts differ. Using an open chart online is allowed.

Combine table choice (S17, 3:2) with correct strategy to minimize edge. Blackjack still carries loss risk (18+).
